Blowback Exhibition

Unblind, Bliss Morton, 2020, watercolor, ink, charcoal, pencil and acrylic on mounted paper

The Blowback Exhibition was a show of previous MFA students that did not get to have their showcase because of COVID. I attended the reception to this show, and it was a really neat experience to see the artists that made their work. The show was in the gallery in the library, and I had not been in that gallery before. They also had food and refreshments provided that we had after we viewed the work. This mixed media piece done by Bliss Morton was one of my favorites from the show because of the lines throughout the piece that distort the image. It reminds me of stained glass or glass breaking. I also really like that in the upper right corner, the piece changes from being colored to having no color where the lines intersect with the form.
Untitled, Liliana Karavay, 2021, oil on canvas

Another piece I enjoyed from the Blowback Exhibition was this oil painting done by Liliana Karavay. The floral details were my favorite aspect of this painting because they bring little pops of color that fit very well with the subject of the piece. The flowers, specifically the pink ones, also look to me like they are embracing the figure. They are also used well to break up the bold red in the background. One of the reasons I also enjoyed this piece was because it was so different than the other ones in the show. This felt like it could be the artist themself, including the raw emotion.
